Widening Gyre, The (Hero) (Print)
[BWG630]
$24.95
by Greg Elkins Date Added: Thursday 21 June, 2012
I decided to purchase the Widening Gyre because one of my players is a big fan of Steampunk. I was uncertain of what I would find or if I would be comfortable using the material. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the supplement and the material in it.

Chapter 1 – History:
While the Widening Gear takes place in the Victorian age, in this chapter the author gives a brief modified history of the world. The author lays out a history up to and including the early 1900s. The history is a mix of actual events and events inspired by Steampunk. This chapter is very helpful in getting a feel for the genre.

Chapter 2 – Organizations:
Every genres need organization for players to work with and against, The Widening Gear is no different. Several organizations both to help and hinder the players.

Chapter 3 – Character Generation
The author gives over ten package deals, as well as discussing skills, talents and perks. He also discusses using resource points in the campaign as well. Sample characters are given both on the side of good and the side of evil.

Chapter 4 – Weapons, Equipment & Magic
Several examples of Steampunk weaponry and equipment are given. Several new spells have been created that can be used in the Widening Gyre or even Fantasy Hero.

Chapter 5 – Adventure
A complete adventure and detail adventure is given with several character write-ups.

Chapter 6 – Sourcebook
In this chapter the author not only discusses the Steampunk genre, but discusses the mix of Steampunk with other genres such as Horror and Western and many other genres. The author also talks about inventions created though out the 19th century. He also discusses life in the 19th century in general as well, which helps to give the feel of the time period.

I found this supplement to be well written and well thought out. The author explains the genre thoroughly and in a way that novices to the genre won’t get “lost”. The supplement is also packed with characters, equipment, weapons and magic spells, so a GM as numerous material to start with and then can add what they like to personalize their campaign.

The supplement will be a useful for any GM and players alike. The package deals listed and the sample characters found throughout the book will help in character creation. The equipment and vehicles listed will help in creation as well.

I highly recommend this supplement to anyone think of start a steampunk campaign. This is another well designed and well laid out supplement from Blackwyrm games.
